Whitsunday
Islands Weather The waters of the Whitsunday
Islands are sheltered by the Great Barrier Reef further offshore, therefore
offering great conditions for sailing and diving virtually all year round. The
exception being if a cyclone develops offshore and then we can get some
reasonably strong winds of between 25 to 35 knots inshore. Obviously if the
cyclone comes close then the winds can become destructive. The cyclone season is
officially from December to April but have come earlier and a little later. The
Whitsunday's last serious cyclone was in 1970 (Cyclone Ada) so the chances of
your holiday and a cyclone coinciding are remote. More info on Ada here.
Basically
Northern Australia has two distinct seasons, the dry season and the wet season.
The wet season generally runs from December to March and the dry season the rest
of the year although it seems the last few years we get most of our rain in the
later half of January and it's always raining at Easter in the
Whitsunday's.
