Named by Admiralty Surveyor for Queensland, Staff Commander E.P. Bedwell, RN in
chartered SS Llewellyn gave this name in 1879 to the whole of the
waters between Peter Head and Tongue Point, which were both named by
him at the same time. A Biblical reference to Saint Peter and the
Apostles and their gathering together at Pentecost when "cloven tongues
as of fire sat upon them .. and they began to speak with other tongues"
(Bible Acts 2). In recent years it has become local practice to refer
separately to the two bays so covered as Tongue Bay and Apostle Bay.
