Great Walks of Queensland is a 10 million dollar State
Government initiative that is creating world-class walking tracks around
Queensland. With tracks ranging from short, easy strolls to long, challenging
walks, Great Walks of Queensland caters for people of all ages and abilities.
Whether you decide on a short, full-day, overnight or extended walk, you will
find an experience to suit your needs and interests. Taking a Great Walk
benefits local economies and increases community awareness, protection and
understanding of our valuable parks and forests. The Whitsundays now has it's
own great walk.
Enjoy a different Whitsunday experience and escape to the
Conway Range, a tropical refuge for wildlife and walkers. The Whitsunday Great
Walk takes you away from urban hustle and surrounds you with rainforest
tranquillity.
With tracks of varying distance and difficulty, everyone
has the opportunity to walk through this diverse, ever-changing coastal
rainforest.
The three day, 30 kilometre Great Walk starts at Brandy
Creek near Cannonvale and finishes at Airlie Beach. Pass towering palms and
cross seasonal creeks on the first day, walk through valleys and moss gardens on
the second, and on the third enjoy views of the islands through open
woodland.
From Brandy Creek, you can choose from two shorter walks. Relax
on a short, self-guided circuit through tall lush rainforest, or allow half a
day to walk a longer track to a cool creek. Here, rest on bench seats surrounded
by palms and listen to the diversity of birds attracted by the
water.
From Airlie Beach, take time out from shops and clubs and enjoy a
day's walk through open woodland and shady stands of tulip oaks. After tackling
some challenging slopes, stand high on the ridge looking beyond Cannonvale to
Dryander Range, the Coral Sea and the Whitsunday Islands.
