Day trips depart from Airlie Beach or Shute Harbour for the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. The two big islands in the Whitsunday Group are Hook Island and Whitsunday Island. These are about 18 nautical miles from Airlie and the nearest reef "On the Great Barrier Reef" is a further 18 nautical miles to a reef called Bait Reef.
